Im thinking of moving in from across town.
I have been playing World of Warcraft for about 2 years now and am pretty deep into it, but the payments are starting to get on my nerves. My brother has been playing guild wars for about 1 year and says that it is amazing and that if i like WoW then id like GW even better because theres no monthly. ive browsed a bit and GW does look like its enjoyable. My first and main question is "Is it worth switching over from WoW?". if you answer yes to the first question then i have more questions like "what GW games do you recommend?". I do have a fairly limited budget and from what i gather the best deal was one i saw in Walmart the other day, it was the original GW and the latest expansion together fairly cheap. would this be a good combination for a noob? or should i get one and progress from there after awile? Answers to these questions and any other positive input you have would be apreciated, Thank you.

Yes that would be a good place to start for new players. There's a section somewhere on the forum here that helps people in your situation (I'll go dig up the link afterwards ).
No one can answer "Is it worth switching over from WoW?" but you. GW not having monhtly payments doesn't mean you'll enjoy it as much as you did WoW. GW and WoW are not even remotely similar in gameplay... dammit you just can't compare the two (the mistake that many, oh so many make). - And as promised, the link: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10102502 And I hate to be blunt... People that usually enjoy the generic MMORPG like WoW tend to think GW sucks. So... why don't you give the game a try on your brother's account first then make a decision from there on. WoW and GW are both great games, but for totally different reasons. If you do start playing GW, don't expect it to be anything like WoW.
I'd recommend that you give GW a try. It offers a great game experience with next to no grind (though there are plenty of optional opportunities to grind, if you're into that). By and large, GW is more about your skill with the game (which skills you choose to put into your build and how you use them in the field) rather than how much time you invest in the game. The Platinum pack you saw in Walmart would be an ideal start for a newcomer. It contains the original game (Prophecies), which has the slowest learning curve and gives you a lot of free skills as you progress through the game, so you can develop your characters at a relaxed pace, not feel rushed, and not have a huge information overload as your skill repertoire expands. Very newb friendly. It also has one of the better storylines. The Eye of the North expansion that comes with the Platinum edition is considerably more challenging, but it also contains heroes (superpowered henchmen that you have full control over) to make things easier. Later on, you could invest in Nightfall which offers a wider array of heroes to recruit and two extra professions to play with. Factions is probably best left until last, as it's very fast paced and throws you in at the deep end on a lot of things though it does have some new professions included; although it must be said that Factions is ideal as a PvP primer course. |

why not just cancel your WoW subscription for a month or 2 and get GW. After all gametime is the only thing that you would lose.

Assassin = squishy melee class (it not played properly) Afflicated Monsters (you fight these dudes most throughout the game) = they blow up (them blowing up hurts you) when they die... ANet was brilliant with this decision........................................ |

The least straightforward profession is the Mesmer, requiring good reflexes, an exquisite sense of timing and an understanding of game mechanics to be effective. They're great fun to play with, but not necessarily the best choice for a first character. |

Just a friendly advice: approach GW with an open-mind. Coming from WoW, you may think that some aspects of the game do not make sense, or may not give you the joy you're looking for in an MMO. But you're mostly wrong, and I'd say that a lot of WoWers may have become (unvoluntarily) prejudiced because they followed a very different and strong game model. GW has a quite subtle game model (not to mention the no-monthly-fees!) and it may take some time to get into it, but believe me, you'll be surprised after a little while.
Follow your brother's advice, give it a try (you can get trial keys, look at this thread: http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/s...php?t=10067073 ) and hope to see you soon part of this community! |

Professions - Necromancer can be fun, and it's kind of straight forward if you want to MM (minion Master) which means a lot of muscle - but you need to have corpses first.
Ranger is also a ton of fun - truth eb told been around for over a year and it's my most played profession. GW is simpler in skill set ups than WoW (WoW confused the heck out of me) and while some people complain about the level (20) as people around here say the game truly begins at level twenty. Hope to see you around the game |

It's definitely as fun as WoW, but in its own ways. They're two different games entirely, each with pros and cons. The thing that attracts most people to GW is exactly what you mentioned: No monthly fees.
As for your first game, Platinum Edition. That's definitely worth getting. That or even just Prophecies on its own. (Usually has Eve on the front, a necromancer with a skull called Adam and grey hair. Also usually unnamed unlike Factions or Nightfall.) |
